African players abroad Ghanaian Schlupp reveals Patrick Vieira’s instructions

Crystal Palace utility player Jeffrey Schlupp has said manager Patrick Vieira wants him to play in advanced attacking positions and exploit pockets of spaces in order to score regularly.

“[Vieira] told me to play in the pockets, play close to the strikers as a right-forward and I managed to find myself close to the goal – and I managed to get myself into the box and get a goal,” the Ghanaian said this in a post-match interview after a 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Sunday.

Schlupp and fellow substitute Michael Olise came off the bench to cancel out Leicester’s first-half goals by Nigerian Kelechi Iheanacho and Englishman Jamie Vardy.

Schlupp said Sunday’s comeback in the game that ended two-all is the blueprint which Vieira wants Palace to build on going forward.

“You can see from the way the team performs, how we’re transitioning to a possession based team,” Schlupp told Sky Sports.

“We’re playing in defence, we’re playing out from the back. We’re playing through the midfield, and obviously we’re trying to get behind teams. We’re doing that well, but obviously it’s still early on.”

Schlupp joined Palace seasons ago from Leicester and he is also a regular for the Black Stars of Ghana.

Palace remain on 13th place with seven points from seven games just below Leicester who have one point more.
