There were speculations in the local press that the Al-Shabab striker was set to make a shock return to the Super Eagles ahead of the upcoming 2022 World Cup qualifiers and 2021 Africa Cup of Nations following talks with Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick. But those reports are wide of the mark.

It is correct that Pinnick had a telephone conversation with Ighalo about the player reversing his retirement decision. However, the 2019 AFCON Golden Boot winner was non-committal. That is to say his response was neither positive nor negative. Nevertheless, Ighalo’s decision to retire from international football still stands.

The 32-year-old has been in red-hot form since the season started, scoring 8 goals in nine appearances in the Saudi Arabian Professional League.
