UEFA Nations League Ronaldo’s double pulls United from jaws of defeat

Cristiano Ronaldo scored in either half to help Manchester United settle for a two-all draw against hosts Atalanta on Tuesday night.

United remain on top of Group F of the Uefa Champions League with seven points from four games whereas Atalanta took their tally to five points.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made three changes to the squad that beat Tottenham Hotspurs 3-0 with  Eric Bailly, Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba getting the starting nod ahead of Victor Lindelof, Fred and Edson Cavani.

Bailly had an outstanding game as he made telling blocks to deny the visitors.

Atalanta wanted to show they learnt lessons from their first leg meeting which saw them throw away a two-goal lead before losing 3-2 .

United had a positive start to the game and were denied by the foot of the upright from a Scott McTominay deflected shot in the fourth minute.  

Such a miss came to haunt the visitors eight minutes later in this match.

Josif Ilicic punished United when he fired hard and low straight goalkeeper David De Gea who failed to handle the ball and it deflected off his body into the low bottom corner.

A few minutes later, Ronaldo threatened to score but his header flashed over the bar.

United suffered another setback when defender Raphael Verane limped off and in came forward Mason Greenwood.

United finally replied in fashion as Ronaldo scored after brilliant combination play involving Greenwoord, the Portuguese and Rashford on the stroke of half-time.

In the second half, Atalanta regained the lead when Duvan Zapata got to the end of a long ball and breached United defence before firing past De Gea with his goal needing VAR check in the 58th minute.

However, Ronaldo had a final say on the game after sweeping his effort into the net with a minute to full-time.

In another game for the group, Villareal beat Young Boys courtesy of goals from Arnaut Danjuma and Etiene Capoue to join United level on seven points.

Young Boys remain bottom of the group with three points from four games whereas Atalanta are third.
