Qatar 2022 Mozambique wind up World Cup qualifiers with win over Malawi

Mozambique wound up the World Cup qualifiers on a high after beating Malawi 1-0 in an academic Group D match played at Matheu Kerekou Stadium in Benin on Tuesday afternoon.

Malawi defender and skipper Limbikani Mzava’s 51st minute own goal settled the contest.

Mozambique moved off the bottom of the table on four points with Malawi, who had beaten the Mambas by a similar margin in the first leg, finishing bottom on three points.

Malawi coach Meck Mwase had ahead of the match made five changes made to the squad that lost 4-0 to Cameroon on Friday.

Winger Peter Banda, goalkeeper Ernest Kakhobwe, defender Gomezgani Chirwa, midfielders Mike Mkwate and Taonga Chimodzi  have earned a starting role ahead of Brighton Munthali, John Banda, Francis Mlimbika, Gerald Phiri and Richard Mbulu who are unavailable due to reasons ranging from injuries to suspensions.

In another match for the group, Cameroon welcome Ivory Coast this evening of Tuesday in a World Cup qualifier that will decide Group D winners.

The Elephants lead the group by a point over the Indomitable Lions and a draw for the visitors would be enough to take them through to the final play-off round for a place at the World Cup finals in Qatar 2022.

On the other hand, Cameroon need nothing short of a win in this game to sail through.
