Zambia Zambia FA announces plans to introduce VAR next season

Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has announced plans to introduce Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the domestic league for the Southern African country from next year.

FAZ president Andrew Kamanga made the announcement on Monday when giving updates on the plans the association has in place to uplift football standards in the country.

He said the association had introduced a coaching school that seeks to uplift coaching standards across the board and that technology such as VAR was also part of the football development mix.

We also have identified technology as one area which requires a lot of investment,” Kamanga told FAZ media.

“In that regard, we will be implementing the VAR from next year because we have been working in the background to ensure that we do adopt these modern technologies. We believe that if we if we introduce VAR in Super League, it would go a long way in  addressing the never-ending complaints against officiating in Super League.”

If implemented, Zambia could become the first country in Southern Africa to adopt the VAR technology which is used in all top leagues across the world.

Morocco became the first country to use VAR technology in 2019 followed by Ghana early this year.

Most African countries are unable to adopt VAR due to poor infrastructure some even are unable to ensure that pitch conditions and other stadium facilities are up to standard.

VAR involves referees operating in a video operation room at a match venue to review via footage of a contentious decision a referee on the pitch has made or has not made regarding a game situation with an aim of reducing human errors.
