Africa Soccer Al Merreikh complain to CAF over Mosimane’s role in CL draw

Sudanese side Al Merreikh has lodged a complaint to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over the involvement of Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane in the 2022 CAF Champions League group stage draw.

Al Merreikh vice-president Adel Abugreisha said it was wrong for the South African mentor to be involved in the draw when the competition involves his Egyptian team.

For the first time, one of the coaches of the 16 participating teams that qualified for the Champions League was involved in the draw,” Abugreisha told Al-Hayah TV.

We lodged a protest to the Confederation of African Football, through an official letter, through President Hazem Mostafa, because of Mosimane picking the teams in the Champions League draw, and we have not received a response from CAF so far.

“This has nothing to do with our relationship with the clubs, the matter is for the Confederation of African Football, Mosimane was an opponent and a referee in the draw, and this happened for the first time. It’s unjust for the Al Ahly coach to take part in the draw,” Abugreisha added.

Al Ahly, who are the defending champions, were drawn in Group A alongside Al Merreikh, another Sudanese side Al-Hilal and Mamelodi Sundowns, Mosimane’s former employers.

Mosimane assisted in drawing out club names from various pots during the draw which took place at CAF Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt last week.
