AFCON Super Eagles Through To Round Of 16 After Victory Over Sudan

Nigeria Super Eagles claimed a convincing 3-1 victory over Sudan in Group D of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations AFCON to book a place in the Round of 16.

The Super Eagles having defeated Egypt 1-0 in the group opener headed to the second game knowing a win will take them through to the knockout stage.

Coach Austine Eguavoen kept the same starting eleven that gave him the win against Egypt.

Samuel Chukwueze put Nigeria ahead in the 3rd minute with Moses Simon providing the assist.

Nigeria dominated possessions and missed clear cut chances that would have seen them put the game to bed early with Taiwo Awoniyi culpable of missing most of the chances.

The Union Berlin scored his first international goal for Nigeria at the brink of the half time as he headed in a flicked ball from captain William Troost-Ekong.

Moses Simon scored Nigeria the third goal in the 46th minute as the Super Eagles came out blistering.

However, after the third goal, Nigeria looked so relaxed as they allowed the Sudanese to mount pressure.

Ola Aina was booked for upending Sudanese player Mustafa Mohamed as the referee awarded a penalty against Nigeria.

Walieldin Khidir stepped up and pulled one back for the Sudanese side in the 70th minute but was not enough to stop the Super Eagles from claiming all three points and top Group D.

Nigeria will be hoping to maintain their unbeaten run when they face Guinea -Bissau in the last group game.
