AFCON CAMEROON 2021 Winning AFCON result of 7 years of working tirelessly—Cisse

Senegal coach Aliou Cisse has attributed the Teranga Lions win of the first ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title on Sunday to pure determination, perseverance and hard work spanning seven years.

We dedicate this victory to the Senegalese people because since independence until now, we have been chasing this first star,” he said.

Cisse spoke in a post-match interview after the Teranga Lions had edged out Egypt 4-2 on post-match penalties following a stalemate in 90 minutes and extra-time in Cameroon.

Today, on our shirt, we will also have a star. I thank my staff. I wanted to come with them. Régis of course, Teddy, Tony, Cheikh, the steward. Really all the people who are glued to this National Team, who have been working tirelessly for almost 7 years,” he added.

“Thank you very much, it was long, difficult, complicated at times, but we never gave up. It was a tough game too. We had our highlight right at the start of this meeting.”

It was a personal triumph for Cisse who, as a player, in 2002 missed a penalty in the final and last year as a coach also saw Senegal lose 1-0 to Algeria in Egypt.

Now, they got the Lions reward for investing in a young team that has been growing together with Sadio Mane among the star players.

Mane was named best player of the tournament with goalkeeper Eduoard Mendy getting best keeper accolade.
