African players abroad Mendy reflects on spending 7 hours in the street celebrating AFCON trophy

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has reflected on Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title celebrations.

The Senegalese keeper told Chelsea website that it was unbelievable for the Teranga Lions spending seven hours in the street in a victory parade.

I stayed on the trophy bus for seven hours with a million fans on the streets of Senegal,” Mendy told the website.

I can’t describe it. It is the first time we have won this trophy. It is amazing. I think everyone now knows what the national team [achievement] means. To win this trophy for the first time is a big achievement.”

Mendy said the feeling of winning AFCON was better than what happened after Senegal had qualified for the World Cup.

For the first World Cup, it was not the same atmosphere and the same energy. It was amazing. It was a million people in the street. It was phenomenal. Honestly, I was so happy to see kids and parents everybody in the streets,” he said.

He said winning the trophy atoned for the 1-0 loss the Teranga Lions suffered to Algeria in the final of the 2019 AFCON edition.
