UEFA Champions League Mahrez’s goal puts City on victory path over Sporting Lisbon

Riyad Mahrez’s opening goal put Manchester City on the path to a comfortable 5-0 win over Sporting Lisbon in Portugal on Tuesday evening.

The win in the Round of 16 first-leg match of the UEFA Champions League gave City an advantage ahead of the home tie.

The Algerian scored barely after seven minutes before Bernado Silva’s goals in the 17th and 44th minutes, in between Phil Foden’s 32nd minute goal.

The Premier League champions led 4-0 at half time.

In the second half, it was a matter of formality for City and damage limitation for the Portuguese side.

Lisbon still conceded again as Raheem Sterling added the fifth goal for City in the 58th minute.

Lisbon finished the entire first half without an effort on target. In the second half, things did not improve for the hosts.

In fact, substitute Neto nearly scored an own goal while trying to clear a Kevin De Bryne free-kick but keeper Adan came to the rescue with a finger-tip save.

Ahead of the game, Lisbon named a strong starting XI with Paulinho and Sarabia among the most recognizable names in the squad.

City manager Pep Guardiola, too, has unleashed his best available squad comprising Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne.

Confirmed Line-Ups:

Sporting Lisbon: Adán; Inácio, Coates, Reis; Porro, Palhinha, Nunes, Esgaio; Gonçalves, Paulinho, Sarabia

Manchester City: Ederson; Stones, Dias, Laporte, Cancelo; Silva, Rodri, De Bruyne; Mahrez, Foden, Sterling
