AFCON AWCON: Onumonu Brace Hands Super Falcons Win Over Ivory Coast

Nigeria Super Falcons claimed a clinical 2-0 triumph over the Lady Elephants of Ivory Coast in the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja.

A brace from Ifeoma Onumonu in the 21st and 56th minute gave the Super Falcons an advantage to advance to the 12th edition of the Africa Women Cup of Nations to be hosted in Morocco.

Randy Waldrum lads having edged Ghana 2-0 in the third round, booked a date with the Lady Elephants.

Waldrum handed Leicester City forward Ashleigh Plumptre her first international debut in the absence of captain, Asisat Oshoala.

Super Falcons dominated the game from the start as they gained control of the pack.

Esther Okoronkwo set up Ifeoma Onumonu who scored the opener from a close range in the 21st minute.

Ivory Coast pushed for the equalizer and almost got it in the 35th minute but Nnadozie Chiamaka mad e a fine save to keep the lead.

Onumonu bagged her brace in the 56th minute as she lobbe the ball over the Ivorian goalkeeper.

The visitors kept pouring attack threat but the Super Falcons remained resolute as the game ended in 2-0.

Nigeria will be hoping to grab the AWCON ticket when they travel to Abidjan for the second leg on February 23.
