African players abroad Aubameyang makes it four goals in five Barcelona games

Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang continued his rich vein of form for Barcelona after scoring in the 4-2 win over Napoli in the Europa League match in Italy on Thursday evening.

He joined on the scoresheet Jordi Alba, Frenkie de Jong and Gerard Pique whereas Lorenzo Insigne and Matteo Politano netted for the hosts.

The Gabonese striker has now scored four goals in five games across all competitions for the Spanish LaLiga side, following his shock exit from Arsenal in England last month.

Last week, the striker scored a hat trick in the 4-1 win over Valencia in a La Liga match.

Ahead of the second leg match in Italy, Aubameyang declared that Barcelona want to win the Europa League.

We want to win the Europa League—we are ready and we want to do well as it is one of the ways into next season’s Champions League. In the first leg, we played really well but we could have scored a few more. We will have chances over there,” he told Barcelona website.

The Gabonese striker told the media in Spain that signing for Barcelona following his fall-out with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was a no-brainer.

He added that playing for Arsenal prepared him for Barcelona football playing philosophy.

It has not been hard settling in because I had seen a lot of Barça matches and at Arsenal with Arteta [the Arsenal coach and former Barça player] we played in a similar way to here. I am looking forward to learning and the squad has given me a great welcome so I am very happy here. When I see how the youngsters are playing, I want to do the same,” Aubameyang told Barcelona website.

Aubameyang left Arsenal in an acrimonious manner after falling out with Arteta who stripped the striker of the English club’s captaincy.

He then joined Barcelona on a free transfer from Arsenal having moved to the North London club from Borussia Dortmund in Germany in 2018.

The Gabonese striker scored 22 goals in 36 appearances for the Gunners compared to 98 goals in 144 matches for Dortmund.

Aubameyang is the captain for Gabon but he was no able to play at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon as he was down with Covid 19 and he was sent back to London after recovering.

The win saw Barcelona proceed to the Round of-16 of the Europa League after the first leg meeting with the Italians had ended goalless at the Camp Nou.

The draw for the Round of 16 will take place later today Friday
