Malawi Malawi FA unveils Charity Shield sponsorship

The kick-off of the 2022 domestic football season in Malawi received a big push following the unveiling of Charity Shield sponsorship on Wednesday in Blantyre.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) unveiled $18, 750 (K15 million) sponsorship from commercial bank, NBS.

Proceeds from the Charity Shield will go towards supporting flood victims in some areas of Malawi especially the Southern Region.

Speaking during the unveiling, NBS Bank Chief Executive Officer Kwanele Ngwenya said they felt obliged to play their part in alleviating the suffering of the floods victims.

“NBS Bank has always supported the community in which it operates. We are today extending this support to not only to fulfil our social responsibility, but also support FAM in bringing the Malawian people their most beloved game through this Charity Shield,” he said at FAM head office in Blantyre.

FAM president Walter Nyamilandu commended NBS for stepping to bankroll the cup that was without sponsorship.

“Every penny realised from this competition will be channeled towards the flood victims,” he said.

The Charity Shield will involve Super League champions, Nyasa Big Bullets and FDH Cup kings Silver Strikers at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday.

The game will curtain-raise the 2022 season scheduled to throw off March 19.

FAM introduced the Charity Shield in 2016.

For the first two years, it was a one-day event involving the team national league champions and national cup winners.

In 2018 and 2019, the Charity Shield involved national league champions, national cup champions (two) and national league runners up.
