Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip refused a comeback to Cameroon national team after discussing with newly-appointed Indomitable Lions coach Rigobert Song and Fecafoot president Samuel Eto’o.

Matip lastly played for Cameroon since September 2015 and a 1-0 win over Gambia during 2017 AFCON qualifiers.

So far, the country’s greatest ever players including Samuel Eto’o have been invited to comeback.

Even his father Jean Matip said he would like to see his on play for Cameroon again as the 2021 AFCON was close.

I want him to come and play for the honor of Africa and Cameroon where I regularly spend time”, his father said in November 2021.

“Cameroonians know my opinion especially with the upcoming AFCON, but the decision has to come from the 30-year-old.”

However, Joel Matip didn’t return and turned down all the approches. And he is yet to change his mind.

According to Cameroon outlet CFOOT, Matip has once again refused to come back to the national team after chatting with legends, Eto’o and Song.

This means that he won’t be there for the Indomitable Lions in their double header against Algeria later this month in 2022 World Cup play-offs.

Cameroon will first host Algeria on March 25 before travelling to Blida for the return leg on March 29.
