Egypt Pitso Mosimane : Africa’s Highest Paid Coach With His New Al Ahly Contract

Egyptian giants Al Ahly have announced on Tuesday the contract extension of coach Pitso Mosimane for two further years. And with his new two-year deal that’s believed to have made him the highest paid football coach in Africa, would make Al Ahly’s Pitso Mosimane the third longest-serving mentor in the club’s history.

Mosimane has broken a series of records since his arrival in Cairo in October 2020 to take over from the departed René Weiler.

Under his guidance, Al Ahly won back-to-back CAF Champions League titles, two CAF Super Cups, the Egypt Cup, and two Club World Cup bronze medals.

Overall, he has led Al Ahly in 83 matches, winning 59 (71%), drawing 17, while losing just seven. In those matches, Al Ahly have scored 182 goals while conceding 70.

Mosimane’s two-year contract is reportedly worth a staggering R60 million (about USD4 million), R30 million per year (about USD2 million). That equates to R2.5 million (about USD1.6 million) each month for the next 24 months. And that’s before any bonuses or incentives for targets reached.

Multiple reports show that no coach on the continent earns more than R2,5m with returning Zamalek coach Jesualdo Ferreira, who hails from Portugal, second behind Mosimane on the top-earners chart as he takes home a cool R2,2m a month, as per various reports.

The contract extension statement by Al Ahly came shortly after the club’s 3-0 win over Pyramids FC on Tuesday.

“Based on the great confidence of the club in their head coach Pitso Mosimane and a translation of the many achievements he has achieved during the past period, the club’s board announces the renewal of Mosimane’s contract for two extra years.” Read the statement.

The club added that Mosimane and his staff have already signed the new contracts ahead of the trip to South Africa which will see Al Ahly face Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League return game.

Coach Pitso is a hard-working man. He deserves this new contract… The work he has done speaks for itself, so he earned this new contract. The fact that it took long to renew the contract has nothing to do with his work ethic. I am not God. I can’t predict if he’ll still be there in 2024.” Mosimane’s assistant coach Cavin Johnson explained to Sowetan on Wednesday.

The 57-year-old coach will now remain with Al Ahly until at least the summer of 2024. And the South African tactician will hope to add extra trophies to his name as he further proves himself as a club legend.
