Qatar 2022 Sadio Mane’s penalty sends Senegal through to the World Cup

Senegal completed a double over Egypt after beating them 3-1 on post-match penalties to seal a 2021 World Cup berth on Tuesday evening.

The Teranga Lions had previously defeated the Egyptians in the final to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon in February.

Therefore, the Pharaohs came to Dakar looking for nothing short of revenge as they commanded a 1-0 first leg lead in the World Cup play offs.

However, it was not to be as Senegal scored barely four minutes into the game to put the hosts ahead.

Dia poked the ball into the net from close range after the visitors had failed to deal decisively with a corner-kick.

That proved to be the only goal of the 90 minutes as the two teams failed to score again in regulation time.

Soon the game went into extra time, which eventually paved the way for post-match penalties.

Such penalties were reminiscent of the 2021 AFCON final, which saw Senegal emerge victorious with Mane converting the decisive spot kick.

The Liverpool forward scored to build on the conversions of Bamba Dieng, Ismail Sarr after captain Koulibaly and Ciss had missed their attempts.

Egypt converted their attempts through El Solia whereas Mohamed Salah and Zizo fluffed their efforts.

Starting Line-Ups:

Senegal: Mendy, Sarr, Koulibaly, Cisse, Ciss, Mendy, Gueye, Sabaly, Mané, Sarr, Dia

Egypt: El Shenawy, Gaber, Rabia, Ibrahim, El Fotouh, Fathi, Elneny, El Solia, Salah, Trezeguet
