South Africa Mamelodi Sundowns hire Flemming Berg as Sporting Director

Mamelodi Sundowns have hired Flemming Berg as the South African top-flight football club’s Sporting Director.

Sundowns chairman Tlhopie Motsepe unveiled Berg on Monday in South Africa.

Berg has joined the DStv Premiership club from Denmark where he worked as Elite Football Development head at the Danish Football Association for seven years.

He also served as an international scout for Chelsea, according to Sundowns website.

Motsepe, son to CAF President Patrice, said they settled for Berg because he understands the club’s football philosophy.

“He understands that it is our responsibility to play entertaining, inspiring and winning football,” he told the website.

The Sporting Director also understands that Mamelodi Sundowns is not just a football club, we are a South African footballing institution and that we have a duty to our country. Our duty is to make a meaningful contribution to South African football, to promote and develop young coaches and players; to make the game better, and above all, our duty is to provide the very best pool of South African footballers for our National Team to select.”

Berg told the website that he was looking forward to his new role.

“It is a great honor to be here and to be given the possibility to work with this fantastic club. The history and culture are in many ways overwhelming. I am so proud, and I am looking forward to taking the position as Sporting Director for Mamelodi Sundowns,” he is quoted saying.

Sundowns are on course to defend the domestic league title in South Africa and are also in the running for the CAF Champions League.
