African players abroad Mane says Liverpool’s win more important than personal glory

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has refused to focus on the goal he scored for the English side in the 3-1 away win to Benfica on Tuesday evening.

The Senegalese player said winning the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal first leg game was more important for him that personal exploits.

“Like I always say, the team is winning – that’s more important [than me scoring],” he told Liverpool website.

I scored a goal today, I’m happy but more important were the goals we scored. We’re waiting for the next game and to get the job done at home.

“A great start [to the week]. We can’t expect better than that and it will help us to prepare for the next game.”

Mane scored Liverpool’s second goal in the 34th minute after French defender Ibrahima Konate, gave Liverpool the lead seventh minutes into the game via a header.

Mane scored the visitors’ second goal with Arnold providing the assist.

Darwin Nunez crawled back some respectability to the scoreline by scoring the consolation.

The visitors wrapped up the evening with Luiz Diaz scoring the third goal for the Jurgen Klopp men whose dream for a treble is on track.
