Africa Soccer Dismissed Malawi coach threatens legal action against FA

Sacked Malawi coach Meck Mwase has threatened to take legal action against the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) for alleged unfair dismissal.

Mwase has since demanded $500,000 payout for the remaining year on his contract. He wrote FAM on Wednesday.

Mwase has made the threat after FAM announced that he will be redeployed with technical director Mario Marinica relinquishing his role to take over the Flames job.

In a letter from his lawyers, Makiyi, Kanyenda and Associates, Mwase has also demanded that FAM should reverse the decision to remove him as Flames coach and issue a public apology.

We have instructions to demand that yourselves undertake the following actions within 48 hours hereof failing which we are in receipt of strict instructions to initiate legal action against FAM without further recourse to yourselves,” the statement reads.

Mwase has asked for a “full withdrawal and/or retraction of the impugned media release. Unconditional apology to our client, which must enjoy similar prominence as the impugned media release. Payment for the full wages, salaries and monetization of all the fringe benefits or other contractual emoluments for the remainder of our client’s contract.”

Mwase steered the Flames to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Cameroon, but FAM demoted him a month before the kick-off of the tournament with the Romanian Marinica taking charge.

FAM said they arrived at the decision due to the Flames struggles in the World Cup qualifiers that came after the Flames had secured AFCON qualification.

FAM has since said Mwase will be redeployed to the position of Malawi under-23 coach.
