African players abroad Riyad Mahrez scores, attributes City’s win over Brighton to patience

Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez has attributed Manchester City’s hard-fought 3-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday evening to patience.

Brighton frustrated City who trailed Liverpool by a point going into the Premier League match before Mahrez’s goal masterminded the comeback.

Brighton kept City at bay until the 54 minute when Mahrez broke the deadlock to score his 23rd goal of the season.

Phil Foden and Bernard Silva goals completed the win that took City back to the top of the log table, one point ahead of Liverpool.

Reflecting on the match, Mahrez told City website they had to keep calm when things did not go their way against Brighton.

We never for one minute thought we wouldn’t score these goals,” he told the website.

“We had to be patient—they defended deep and went man for man at times, but we stayed patient.”

Manager Pep Guardiola agreed with Mahrez saying City have been in a similar position where they cannot afford to drop a single point lest Liverpool seize the advantage.

“It happened three years ago when we won 14 games in a row to be champion,” Pep told City website.

“That feeling is there. If we win all the games we will be the champions. If we drop points we won’t.”

City’s next opponents are Watford.
