Champions League Petro de Luanda send Mamelodi Sundowns packing from CAF Champions League

Petro de Lunda held Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw on Saturday evening and advance to the CAF Champions League semifinal 3-2 on aggregate.

The quarterfinal second leg match was full of drama at FNB Stadium with Sundowns wasting a penalty opportunity before the referee awarded a penalty to the visitors after consulting VAR.

Sundowns dominated the first-half but they lacked urgency in their passing; hence unable to unlock the visitors’ defence which sat deep with more men behind the ball to repel attacks.

The Pretoria-based side should have put themselves ahead on the stroke of half-time from the penalty spot.

A player for Petro de Luanda slid his tackle onto a leg of a Sundowns player in the danger zone.

Themba Zwane stepped forward but sent his effort bouncing off the post.

First half ended goalless but there was no doubt as to who was on top of the proceedings in terms of ball possession.

Sundowns got a perfect start to the second half when Brian Onyango fired the ball into the net from a rebound.

Petro de Luanda had failed to clear a Sundowns freekick properly to gift the Ugandan the shooting opportunity.

The response was instant for the Angolans but they were unfortunate to have Knito’s effort disallowed.

The referee ruled that Petro de Lunda defender and captain Pinto had impeded Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango as he jumped to cut a long ball from the left.

Petro finally got their reward as they leveled matters when Tiago scored from the penalty spot.

Andile Jali for Sundowns was adjudged to have fouled Gleison for the Angolans to give away the penalty.

The DStv Premiership champions pushed more men in attacking after making a couple of substitutions looking to restore their lead.

Petro de Luanda came to South Africa while carrying a slender 2-1 lead from the first leg held in Launda.
