The Sports Ministry has authorised Jose Peseiro’s appointment as the Super Eagles’ new head coach.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is said to have chosen Peseiro over three other applicants to succeed Gernot Rohr as the Super Eagles’ substantive head coach.

According to multiple sources, the Sports Ministry, led by Sunday Dare, questioned the NFF’s protocols in picking the Portuguese.

Laurent Blanc of France, Ernesto Valverde of Barcelona, and Philip Cocu of the Netherlands are the other three candidates for the job.

After conversations with the NFF, the sports ministry has now accepted Peseiro’s appointment, according to Africatopsports.com.

The deal details, including documentation, are virtually complete, and an announcement is expected soon.

The NFF first declared that the 62-year-old would lead the Super Eagles after the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

After Augustine Eguavoen’s provisional position was extended to cover the ill-fated 2022 World Cup playoffs versus Ghana’s Black Stars, Peseiro decided not to take the role.

The Portuguese were most recently in charge of the Venezuelan national team. His lone managing experience in Africa comes from the Egyptian team Al Ahly.

It’s unclear whether Peseiro will lead the Super Eagles in their upcoming friendlies against Mexico and Ecuador.

Salisu Yusuf, the first assistant coach, issued a 30-man list for the friendly on Tuesday. The friendlies will take place in late May and early June in the United States of America.

Next month, the Super Eagles will play Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
