AFCON Mozambique share spoils with Rwanda in AFCON qualifier

Mozambique and Rwanda opened their Group L qualifying campaign of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a 1-1 draw on Thursday in South Africa.

It was the visitors the Amavubi from East Africa who made a quick impression in Johannesburg.

Nishimwe Blaise stunned the hosts when he scored via a delicate lob past Mozambique keeper in the 65th minute for Rwanda to lead 1-0.

However, Mozambique replied barely two minutes later with a goal coming from Rafito who connected a perfectly weighted cross to make it 1-1.

That proved to be the final goal of the game.

The match took place at FNB Stadium as Mozambique’s home venue in Maputo is yet to meet CAF’s standard for hosting high profile matches.

Mozambique are desperate to end their 12-year absence from the AFCON finals.
