AFCON Ahly’s El-Shennawy Set To Miss Egypt’s AFCON Qualifiers For COVID-19 Reasons

Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced on Thursday the Egypt main goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawy has tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers against Guinea and Ethiopia next week.

Mohamed El-Shennawy has tested positive for COVID-19 and gone into isolation since yesterday.” Read a statement by EFA.

The Pharaohs number 1 keeper had just returned from Morocco after playing with Al Ahly in the African Champions League final which they lost to Wydad Casablanca on Monday. And he joined Egypt’s base on Wednesday alongside six other Red Devil players.

Egypt is set to face Guinea and Ethiopia on 5 and 9 June, respectively, in the AFCON qualifiers. The Pharaohs will then fly to Seoul to play a friendly against South Korea on 14 June.

The 33-year old El-Shennawy is likely to miss the Guinea game at home. But he may be ready for the trip to Addis Ababa.

Pharaohs Coach Ehab Galal, who is set for his debut with Egypt, has included three other keepers in his squad; the 2021 Nations Cup hero Mohamed Abou Gabal (Zamalek), Mohamed Sobhi (Pharco FC), and Mahmoud Gaad (Enppi).
