CAF CONFEDERATION CUP WAFCON 2022: TSG Hails Increment Of Participating Teams

The Technical Study Group (TSG) members of CAF has submitted that the increase of teams from 8 to 12 at the WAFCON 2022 significantly raised the quality and standard of the competition.

TSG members Jacqui Shipanga from Namibia, Mercy Tagoe from Ghana, and Clémentine Touré from Côte d’Ivoire spoke to the media at a news conference on Tuesday at the Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex to share their thoughts on the competition, which has been really exciting thus far.

Tagoe continued, “The TSG has now been made that the number of teams participating in the competition should be further extended to 16 teams in the following editions of WAFCON.”

“We have seen the level of this edition. The level will be even higher if we have more nations.

We are 54 federations in Africa, so it would be wise to have more selections at WAFCON,” said Tagoe.

Jacqui Shipanga appreciated the level of dedication shown by all of the competing nations and singled out the semifinal between Morocco and Nigeria as her favorite match so far in the competition.

Shipanga also observed that the teams that played well together advanced the farthest in the competition.

“Football is above all a collective game. We can mention teams such as Morocco, Zambia and South Africa, who played well with strong combinations and a collective game plan.

You also have to work, plan and invest. When we see what Morocco has invested in the development of women’s football, we now understand the results they have achieved in this competition,” said Shipanga.

The TSG also described how they choose the recipients of the “Woman of the Match” honors given out at each of the WAFCON games.

They claimed that several factors are taken into consideration.

The player’s attitude throughout the game, the effect she has on her team, as well as her sense of sportsmanship and fair play, are just as important as her technical and tactical abilities.

The TSG praised the caliber of football played by the four nations who have qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup thus far and emphasized the necessity of them doing their homework if they wanted to compete in the world championship.
