Awarded the Golden Ball for his outstanding play in the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2015, he signed with English Premier League team Arsenal.

Nwakali signed a three-year contract with Huesca on September 2, 2019. Despite not playing for the first team, he thanked Arsenal for his time with them after leaving the organization.

Prior to the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup, Nwakali was named to the Golden Eaglets’ provisional squad, however he did not make the team.

However, he was appointed captain before the 2015 U-17 World Cup as he guided Nigeria to victory, taking home the Golden Ball Award in the process.

He was recalled to the Super Eagles team on Christmas Day 2021 in order to compete in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, which was moved up to 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
