However, Man United legend Roy Keane is not surprised seeing Ronaldo not starting this game as he argued that he lacked game time during preseason.

“Ronaldo is great, but he only played 45 minutes in pre-season. I don’t care if you take good care of yourself, it takes more than that. It was just common sense really [ten Hag’s decision]”, Keane said on Sky Sports.

However, he urged Man United to find a strong replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo before letting him go as he doubts Anthony Martial’s consistency.

“They [Man United] haven’t got enough options [up front], which might change over the next few weeks”, he said.

“But from a football point of view, you have to hold on to Ronaldo. You can’t just let him go without the back-up behind it.

“You can’t think Martial is the answer – he isn’t. He’s had a decent pre-season. Big deal.”
