FIFA U20 WORLD CUP FIFA WWC: The Netherlands Parts Way With Mark Parsons

The Netherlands, which placed third at the most recent FIFA Women’s World Cup, are looking for a new head coach after parting ways with Mark Parsons.

The Dutch lost to France in the round of eight of the UEFA Women’s EURO, giving up their title as continental champions, and the Englishman, who was chosen to succeed Sarina Wiegman last May, has paid the price.

“The KNVB and national coach Mark Parsons have jointly decided to end the collaboration,” read the association’s statement.

“An evaluation of the past period was then carried out with various parties.

This showed that there is too little confidence that the ambitions will be realized under the current leadership.”

In a message posted to Twitter, Parsons expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Netherlands team while also admitting that it had been “extremely difficult” for him to do so.

The KNVB director in charge of women’s football, Jan Dirk der Zee, added: “The performances and the results in the European Championship were unsatisfactory, and we cannot afford that.

“The bar is high. The Netherlands were defending champions and also finalists at the last World Cup, we want to participate for the prizes.

With a view to the current World Cup qualifying series, it has been decided that someone else will be at the helm in the very short term.

That is not a nice decision, but that is also part of elite football.”

With Iceland, who have played one fewer game than the Dutch team, only two points behind them in Group C, the stakes are unquestionably high for the Dutch team going into those FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

On Tuesday, September 6, the top two will square off, and only a victory is expected to secure the Netherlands’ spot in Australia & New Zealand in 2023.
