FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP FIFA U20 WWC: Falconets Set To Maintain Winning Streak Against Canada

Nigeria Falconets will be hoping to consolidate on their high flying performance against Canada in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup group stage match at the Estadio Alajuela Morera Soto in what would be the early hours of Thursday (3am in Nigeria).

The Falconets have found themselves in the best part of the spotlight after 1-0 victories over France and Canada propelled them to the top of Group C, but Head Coach Chris Danjuma Musa insists that his players have their feet firmly planted as they take on the North Americans in hopes of earning another three points.

“We would like to make it three wins out of three to maintain a great mental state –the winning mentality.

” If we are used to winning, it would be difficult for any team to bring us down.

“It would be a mistake to reduce our pace and zest simply because we have qualified for the quarter-finals.

“The best way to do it, always, is to consider each match as a task that must be accomplished and not slow down.

“We will still meet tougher teams ahead and the winning mentality is what will sustain us.”

After losing their first two games to Korea Republic and France, with a deficit of four goals, Canada, the tournament’s host eight years ago when Nigeria made it to the Final for the second time (losing by an odd goal to Germany), is riding an impossible wave.

Nigeria has already qualified, thus the race for the second slot in Group C is a straightforward one between Korea Republic and France, who play in the Estadio Nacional in San Jose at the same time (3 a.m. Nigeria time).

Each team has earned three points.

In order for Canada to advance, they would need to defeat Nigeria by a large margin and hope that either France or Korea Republic would humiliate the other in the capital.

Musa will undoubtedly start with the women who defeated the obstinate Koreans on Sunday night.

The steel and awareness of captain Oluwatosin Demehin, Omowumi Oshobukola, Jumoke Alani, and Rofiat Imuran are supporting the two-time runners-up pretty well at the back, and goalkeeper Omini Oyono demonstrated better composure and ball handling.

In addition to Chioma Olise, Bashirat Amoo, Joy Jerry, and the tenacious Mercy Idoko, midfielder Esther Onyenezide, who scored the goal that defeated the Koreans, and striker Flourish Sabastine, who scored the three-point winner versus France, are also anticipated to be in the mix.
