UEFA Champions League UCL: Matip Late Goal Earns Liverpool Win Against Ajax

Liverpool earned their first UEFA Champions League UCL victory of the year thanks to Joel Matip’s late header against Ajax at Anfield.

This was undoubtedly a significant improvement from the “horror show” that was their 4-1 loss to Napoli in their group opener, as demanded by manager Jurgen Klopp.

As a result of numerous opportunities Liverpool produced and Mohamed Salah’s goal after a ball from Diogo Jota, Liverpool earned the lead.

Mohammed Kudus’ fierce effort hit the underside of the bar and went in to tie the score, but Matip’s header in the 89th minute won it.

Late in the game, Daley Blind missed a great opportunity to give Ajax the lead before Matip rose to head the winning goal, which was verified by goal-line technology. Matip last scored in the Champions League nine years ago.

For the beaten finalists from last season, it represented a crucial three points and the beginning of their comeback from the opening defeat in Italy, which Klopp dubbed the worst performance of his time in charge at Anfield.

Ajax will understandably be frustrated with the final result given that they were within a few seconds of earning a crucial point, but they will also rightfully feel that they demonstrated enough to think they can still advance from what is turning out to be a competitive group.
