FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP FIFA U17 WWC: Flamingos Defeat Germany To Claim Bronze

The Nigerian Flamingos won the bronze medal at the 2022 U-17 women’s World Cup in India on Sunday after defeating Germany in a penalty shootout.

The Flamingos let the Germans take a 3-0 lead but ultimately prevailed 3-2 in the shootout.

Three of the Germans’ attempts were unsuccessful, but one of the Flamingos’ attempts was successful.

Nigeria’s goals came from Opeyemi Ajakaye, Aminat Bello, and Edidiong Etim, while the European U-17 champions’ goals came from Jella Viet, Paulina Platiner, and Loreen Bender.

Recall that in their tournament debut, the Germans rallied from a goal down to defeat the Flamingos 2-1.

After a VAR review, it was determined that Germany’s fifth-minute goal was illegal due to a foul on Flamingos goalkeeper Faith Omilana.

Ajakaye scored her first goal of the competition to give the Flamingos the lead in the 20th minute.

Due to Comfort Folorunsho’s injury, Flamingos were forced to make a substitution with two minutes remaining in the first half.

Bello increased the Flamingos’ advantage in the 48th minute by nodding in a corner.

The Flamingos persisted in their pursuit of additional goals, and on minute 63 they were rewarded off the foot of substitute Etim.


Jella Viet scored a goal for Germany in the 73rd minute.

Platiner scored Germany’s second goal in the 88th minute, and Bender scored their third in the final minute.

The current U-17 women’s champions Spain and Columbia will face off in the final later on Sunday.
