CAF Champions League CAF WCL: Defending Champions Mamelodi Sundowns Pip Bayelsa Queens

The champions Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queens 2-1 in their opening match of Group B at the 2022 CAF women’s Champions League in Morocco on Monday.

Lelona Daweti scored once in each half to give Mamelodi Sundowns a 2-0 lead, earning her the first double of this year’s competition.

Late in the game, Bayelsa Queens, who were making their debut, got a goal back through Mary-Magdalene Anjor, but it was only a consolation.

Falconets forward Flourish Sabastine played for Bayelsa Queens.

When Bayelsa Queens take on TP Mazembe on Thursday, they will be looking to recover from their loss to Mamelodi Sundowns.

However, the Congolese began their campaign with a 1-0 victory against Egypt’s Wadi Degla.

Green Buffaloes of Zambia destroyed Determined Girls of Liberia 4-0 in the Group A match that was played on Sunday, and hosts AS Far of Morocco defeated Simba Queens of Tanzania 1-0.

Mamelodi Sundowns won the inaugural CAF women’s Champions League, which was played in Egypt in 2021.

In the championship, the South Africans defeated Ghana’s Hasaacas Ladies 2-0.
