Liverpool UCL Draws Knockout: Liverpool, Real Madrid Rivalry Rekindles Again

In a rematch of the Champions League final from the previous season, Liverpool was paired with league champion Real Madrid in the round of 16.

Six-time champion Liverpool will face Real Madrid for the fourth time in six seasons in the Champions League.

Real Madrid triumphed on both of those occasions, in finals, in 2017–18 and 2021–22.

During the 2020–21 season, the reigning Spanish champions eliminated Liverpool in the quarterfinals.

In the final last year in Paris, 14-time champion Real Madrid defeated Liverpool 1-0 on the strength of a goal from Vinicius Junior in the 59th minute.

Only Real Madrid and AC Milan have won the competition more frequently than Jurgen Klopp’s team, which has appeared in three of the last five European championships, including the one that took place in Paris last season.

Although they have not previously won the Champions League, English champions City are considered the favorites to win the league this year.

They were two goals up on aggregate heading into the last minute but fell 1-0 to Chelsea and were eliminated by Real Madrid in the semi-finals the following year.

RB Leipzig, who will face them in the round of 16, did not advance past the group stages of the last campaign and is now ranked sixth in the German Bundesliga.

The opponents, Borussia Dortmund, have not advanced past the eighth round since reaching the 2012–13 final under former manager Jurgen Klopp, while two-time champions Chelsea also lost to Real Madrid in the quarterfinals of the previous season.

Jude Bellingham of England, who led Borussia Dortmund over Sevilla in the group stage, will compete against numerous international teammates at Chelsea.

Tottenham will play seven-time European champions AC Milan for the first time in eleven years after losing to Liverpool in the 2018–19 final in Madrid.

Antonio Conte, who managed AC Milan’s rivals Inter from 2019 and 2021 before joining Spurs, is on his way back to Italy.

With talents Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe on the roster, Paris St-Germain has not dropped a match since March and is vying for its first European championship.

Napoli, the current Serie A leader in Italy, takes on Frankfurt; they have suffered just one loss so far this year, to Liverpool in the final group-stage match.

After an injury-time sixth goal over Maccabi Haifa brought them equal with Paris St-Germain in all possible outcomes, Portuguese team Benfica, which will play Club Bruges, advanced as group winners and claimed top honors by amassing more away goals in the group.

Tottenham plays Italian powerhouse AC Milan, while Premier League champion Manchester City takes on German team RB Leipzig.

Borussia Dortmund, a German opponent, faces Chelsea as well.

Bayern Munich was drawn against Paris St. Germain, the French champions.

The first legs of the last-16 will be held on February 14–15 and 21–22, and the second legs will be held on March 7-8 and 14–15.
