Cameroon Qatar 2022: Song Names Two Home Based Players In Cameroon Squad

Two players from Cameroon were selected by head coach Rigobert Song Bahanag for his 26-man team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will begin in Qatar later this month.

After his team’s 1-1 friendly tie with Jamaica on Wednesday, Song revealed his lineup at a press conference in Yaounde.

The only two Cameroonian players included in the traveling party for Cameroon to Abu Dhabi, where they will continue preparations, are captain Souaibou Marou of Coton Sport and the quick winger Jerome Ngom Mbekeli of Colombe Sportive.

Souaibou Marou, 21, has had an outstanding season with Cotonsport of Garoua, helping his team win the domestic double and significantly contributing to Cotonsport’s advancement to the CAF Champions League group stage.

Rigobert Song, who was a member of the Cameroon team that won qualification in Algeria in March of this year, has given him the chance to live out his dreams. He was recently named the best footballer in Cameroon.

Jerome Ngom Mbekeli, 24, has been playing well for Cameroon Elite one side Colombe Sportive of the Dja and Lobo. He now has the chance to show off his talent on a big stage around the world.

Rigobert Song has chosen three goalkeepers, with Andre Onana of Inter Milan, David Epassy, and Simon Ngapandouetnbu of Olympique Marseille being his top choices.

His six-man midfield is led by Andre Franck Zambo Anguissa of Napoli, while his seven-man defense is captained by the seasoned Nicolas Nkoulou.

In command of the 10-man attacking section is Captain Vincent Aboubakar.

The 26 members of Cameroon’s world cup roster had only three previous World Cup appearances between them. Following selection in the 2010 and 2014 editions, Nicolas Nkoulou, Vincent Aboubakar, and Choupo Moting will play in their third world cups.
With the unstoppable lions in their first big tournament will be Rennes Christopher Maurice Wooh, Swansea City’s Jules Olivier Ntcham, Kevin Nkoudou, Bryan Mbeumo, and Young Boys’ Jean Pierre Nsame.

The most notable omission from Rigobert Song’s list is defender Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui of Club Gent, who was instrumental in Cameroon’s qualification for the tournament.

The Indomitable Lions, who will be taking part in their eighth world cup, are placed in Group G with Serbia, Brazil, and Switzerland.

On Wednesday night at the Amadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde, Rigobert Song and his primarily domestically based team drew 1-1 with the Reggae Boys of Jamaica before leaving Cameroon. After McMaster Justin had given Jamaica the lead, Coton Sport midfielder Kaiba Djawal came on as a substitute to tie the game for Cameroon.

On November 24, Cameroon will play Switzerland to open their world cup campaign. On November 28, they will play Serbia, and on December 2, 2022, they will play Brazil to close out the group stage.
