Tobi Amusan, the hurdles queen of Nigeria, was named one of the top five finalists for the Women’s World Athlete of the Year award.

On Monday, the World Athletics official website released the whole shortlist.

The only female African that qualified for the esteemed individual award is Amusan.

She will compete for the prize alongside Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela, Sydney McLaughlin of the United States, Kimberly Garcia of Peru, and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica.

The finalists were chosen using a three-way voting method, claims World Athletics.

While fans entered their choices online via the World Athletics social media channels, where a record 1.3 million votes were registered, the World Athletics Council and the World Athletics Family submitted their ballots via email.

The World Athletics Council’s vote determined 50% of the outcome, while the votes of the World Athletics Family and the general public each determined 25% of the outcome.

On October 31, voting was over.

On December 5th, as part of the 2022 World Athletics Awards, the World Athletes of the Year will be revealed on World Athletics’ social media platforms.

Amusan had a standout 2022, winning the 100-meter hurdles at the World Athletics Championship in Oregon, the Diamond League, the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, the African Championship, and more.
