AFCON AFCON 2023 Qualifier: Djurtus Stuns Nigeria In Abuja To Top Group A

Guinea-Bissau stunned Nigeria’s Super Eagles 1-0 in Group A of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers in Abuja.

Guinea-Bissau have now defeated the Super Eagles for the first time.

In the fourth minute, Osimhen got the Eagles’ first chance on goal, but his header from Samuel Chukwueze’s cross flew wide.

A long-range effort from a Guinea-Bissau player fell barely off goal in the 21st minute.

Balde deftly controlled a long pass before shooting past Francis Uzoho to give Guinea-Bissau the lead in the 29th minute.

Guinea-Bissau nearly increased their advantage a few minutes later, but the ball hit the side netting.

In the 56th minute, the Eagles came out with more purpose and almost equalized, but Moses Simon was unable to put Chukwueze’s low cross into goal.

Osimhen gathered the ball in the 61st minute and launched a shot that the keeper saved excellently.

Osimhen missed the target from a Simon cross with 13 minutes remaining.

The Super Eagles threw everything on the game and had more possessions but lacked the firepower to score against a well coordinated Guinea-Bissau side.

Guinea-Bissau now top Group A with 7 points while Nigeria have six points from three games.
