African players abroad Wanyama leads the way as CF Montreal defeat Inter Miami

Kenya international Victor Wanyama put up a solid display as CF Montreal defeated Inter Miami 1-0 in a closely fought Major League Soccer (MLS) fixture at Saputo Stadium on Sunday.

After a close battle in the first half which did not produce goals, Montreal finally broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute when Nigerian striker Chinonso Offor powered home past Miami’s goalkeeper Drake Callender.

Kenya’s Wanyama captained the side which also featured another Nigeria player- forward Sunusi Ibrahim. Ibrahim should have scored in the 23rd minute after being set up by Wanyama, but he unleashed a feeble shot that was dealt with by Callender.

Montreal goalkeeper Jonathan Sirios made five big saves for his fifth shutout of the season and defender Joel Waterman made a critical clearance in the waning minutes.

While Wanyama featured for the entire game, Ibrahim was withdrawn in the 71st minute for Sean Rea.

Montreal will next travel to face DC United at Audi Field on June 1.
