CAF Champions League One dead, several injured as Yanga SC lose to USM Alger

One person has been confirmed dead, and 30 others injured following the chaos that erupted outside Benjamin Mkapa Stadium during the Young African (Yanga SC) versus USM Alger Caf Confederation Cup final first-leg fixture on Sunday.

Through her Twitter handle, Tanzania’s Health Minister Ummy Mwalimu identified the person, who passed on as a male of 40 years.

“Concerning injuries at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, Temeke Referral Hospital has received 30 injured people, and one person [male] aged almost 40 years has been pronounced dead,” Mwalimu wrote.

“Most of them have succumbed to minor injuries and are progressing well with treatment plus further diagnosis underway.”

The first leg fixture saw tickets sold out a day before the clash which Yanga suffered a 2-1 defeat and will face a tall order in the return leg set for Algiers on June 2.

Aimen Mahious put the Algerian side ahead in the 32nd minute courtesy of his powerful header that left Yanga goalie Djigui Diarra with no answers.

In the second half, Fiston Mayele balanced the equation after his brilliant strike in the 82nd minute restored smiles on thousands of Timu ya Mwananchi fans, who stormed the venue to cheer their side.

However, the celebrations were cut short four minutes later as Islam Merili coolly slotted in the second goal after a superb counter-attack that exposed the host’s defensive line.
