CAF Champions League President Suluhu congratulates Yanga SC for reaching final

Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan has congratulated Young Africans (Yanga SC) for reaching the final of the Caf Confederation Cup.

The Jangwani-based giants fell short of lifting the title for the first time ever on away goals rule despite securing a 2-2 aggregate result against USM Alger.

Yanga had suffered a 2-1 defeat in the first leg at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium but they travelled to Algiers where they stunned the hosts 1-0 at Stade du 5 Juillet on Saturday. However, the victory was not enough to help them win the trophy.

“History you have written in this competition is big and reputable to our nation. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors,” wrote President Suluhu on her social media accounts.

Despite missing out on the trophy, Yanga goalkeeper Djigui Diarra was voted Man of the Match after making a couple of saves including saving a penalty, while striker Fiston Mayele clinched the Golden Boot after netting seven goals.

In the away fixture, Djuma Shabani netted from a spot-kick in the fifth minute to put Yanga ahead and in the 56th minute, USM were awarded a penalty which was saved by Yanga custodian Diarra.

Yanga, who have already been crowned Tanzanian Premier League champions with two matches to spare, will shift their focus to the final of the Azam FA Cup where they are scheduled to take on Azam FC.
