AFCON AFCON 2023 QUALIFIER: Watenga among 19 axed from Uganda squad

Uganda coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredejovic has axed 19 players while naming in his final squad for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against Algeria in Cameroon.

Initially, the Serbian tactician had summoned a 42-man squad to start preparations for the Group F fixture at Japoma Stadium on June 18. South Africa-based goalkeeper Ismail Watenga has been dropped alongside Moses Opondo (Horsens), Musa Ramathan (MFK Vyskov), Ibrahim Juma (CD Leganes), and Allan Enyou (CD Leganes).

Four players from newly crowned Ugandan Premier League and Uganda Cup winners Vipers SC namely – Hillary Mukundane, Ashraf Mandela, Isa Mubiru, and Bright Anukani – have not made the cut.

Others left out include the KCCA FC duo of Bright Anukani and Saidi Mayanja, Gaddafi goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa, James Begisa (URA), Derrick Ndahiro (URA), George Kasonko (BUL), Rogers Mugisha (UPDF), Shariph Kimbowa (Wakiso Giants) and Charles Bbaale (SC Villa).
