Nigeria Women Football League Chinaza Brace Hands Delta Queens NWFL Title After 12 Years Hiatus

Substitute Chinaza Agoh was the heroine of the day as Delta Queens dethroned Bayelsa Queens to be crowned the Nigeria Women’s Football League NWFL Premiership champions for the first time in 12 years.

A pulsating final at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba saw Delta Queens finished set a new record as the only team to win the NWFL Premiership unbeaten.

After a win over Confluence Queens in their opening game of the NWFL Super Six Playoffs, Delta Queens reached the final following a goalless draw with Edo Queens on Friday to set the final showdown with Bayelsa Queens.

With a mouthwatering cash prize of N10 million and continental ticket for the CAF Women’s Champions League at stake, both teams filed out for a pulsating south South derby.

Delta Queens started the game brightly looking to draw the first blood but neither side gave room for complacency until in the 14th minute when Chisom Henry put the bal in her own new after a freekick from Bayelsa Queens.

The goal changed the tempo of the game as Delta Queens began to hunt for the equalizer with Mercy Omokwo leading the charge but always meeting a resilient Bayelsa Queens defenders.

With three minutes to end of the first , Omokwo was brought down inside the box by Igwe Uzoamaka.

Mabokanje Fehintola stepped up to take the penalty kick but skewed the ball far from the post as Delta Queens missed the chance to level heading into the break.

Delta Queens looked more determined in the second half as they intensity to equalize kept increasing.

Coach Tosan Blankson brought in leading goalscorer, Agoh Chinaza and Inyang Esther to inject more energy on his team in the 65th minute.

Just two minutes of her introduction, Chinaza levelled for Delta Queens with an acrobatic goal after Bayelsa Queens goalkeeper failed to deal with a free kick.

In the 86th minute Chinaza scored the second goal after she outpowered her marker inside the box and fired a shoot which Bayelsa Queens goalkeeper could not found any answer to.

Despite late threats from Bayelsa Queens to level the score, it was already too late as Delta Queens emerged winner of the 2022/2023 NWFL Season.
