Nigeria Premier League NPFL: Newcomer, Sporting Lagos Stun Gombe United In Lagos

Sporting Lagos opened the 2023–24 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season with a surprising 2-0 victory over Gombe United on Monday, making it a memorable day for Lagosians.

The match was the main event at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, where thousands of football fans tuned in to watch Sporting Lagos’ inaugural match in the top division.


Rivio Ayemwenre, who elegantly led Sporting Lagos and was left unmarked, gave the hosts the lead.

They headed into halftime with a goal advantage after Jonathan Alukwu’s exquisite delivery was tucked home in the 42nd minute.

Nantuan Clement scored in the 71st minute of the second half to give the team captained by Paul Offor a 2-0 advantage.

Junior Lokosa had missed an overhead kick, which gave Clement the opportunity to score from close range.

The NPFL newcomers won easily at home as they began their first season in the top-flight league of Nigeria for the first time in the club’s history.

When Sporting Lagos plays Akwa United on Sunday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, they will have a difficult assignment on their hands in Matchday 2.
