Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says Bukayo Saka is “in contention” to face Manchester City on Sunday.
Saka limped off in Arsenal’s midweek Champions League defeat at Lens on Tuesday, with Arteta admitting he did not at that point know the extent of the injury. The forward — who was named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad on Thursday — had also gone off in Arsenal’s win over Bournemouth the previous weekend.
But Arteta said on Friday of Saka: “He’s in contention. He had to leave the pitch. Let’s see how he recovers.” On Thomas Partey, who returned as an unused sub against Lens: “He is ahead of schedule. He will be in the squad.”
Saka’s substitution during the defeat to Lens was the third time this season that the England international has been withdrawn from the pitch due to an injury. The 22-year-old had hobbled off in the latter stages of his side’s 4-0 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday after picking up a similar knock to the one he sustained against Tottenham six days earlier but started Tuesday’s game in France.
