African players abroad Osimhen wins 2023 AIC Footballer of the Year award

Nigeria international Victor Osimhen was officially crowned as the Italian Footballers’ Association (AIC) Footballer of the Year after a marvelous season in front of goal for Napoli on Monday.

Osimhen won the award thanks to his influence on Napoli’s Scudetto-winning campaign last season. The Super Eagles striker scored 26 goals in 32 Serie A games as Napoli were runaway title winners. Even this season, despite injury problems, Osimhen has scored six goals from 10 games.

The AIC awards, which began in 1968, include several notable accolades, including the team of the year, coach of the year, club of the year, and goal of the season. Napoli’s former boss Luciano Spalletti and winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia picked up the awards for best coach and best goal of the season respectively.

Under Spalletti’s guidance, Napoli finished the season on 90 points, a club record in the three-point era, and had 16 points worth of breathing room between them and runners-up Inter.
