Struggling AS Kigali handed Rayon Sports a major upset as Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Kigali Pele Stadium moved them out of the Rwandan Premier League relegation zone.
The ‘Citizens’ had to play the final 13 minutes of the game with ten men after Jean Bosco Akayezu was shown a red card in the 77th minute. But they held their fort to record a much-needed win. It took Erisa Ssekisambu just 18 minutes to put AS Kigali ahead as Rayon failed to hold their might at the back. The former Kiyovu Sports striker made it 2-0 in the 24th minute as AS Kigali completely dominated the game.
Rayon lifted their performance getting to the end of the first half and pulled one back in the 45th minute through Kevin Muhire. Rashid Kalisa and Heritier Luvumbu, who were operating in the midfield, showed signs of individual brilliance as they released some decent balls to Esenu upfront but the Ugandan forward failed to capitalize on them.
AS Kigali were reduced to 10 men after defender Jean Bosco Akayezu was sent off in the 77th minute following an infringement and the citizens had to quickly reorganize. They decided to sit back, soak the pressure, and play on counter-attacks. And it worked to perfection as they maintained their lead until referee blew the final whistle.
The result saw AS Kigali move up to 12th position with 14 points, two points clear of the drop zone.
