AFCON AFCON: Zambia league to take break for Ivory Coast tournament

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) wishes to inform its members and stakeholders that the league will be on recess during the Africa Cup of Nations that kicks off on January 13.

FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga says the decision was made in consultation with the Zambian Premier League. “We have taken into consideration various aspects among them the cognisance of some players that will be away on national duty and also allow fans to follow the tournament with undivided attention,” said Kamanga.

“The mid-season recess will run from January 15, 2024, to February 12, 2024. Kindly take note that matches will be played up to January 14.”

Kamanga says the continuation of the league will not affect the Week 17 mid-season cap for qualified teams for the 2024 ABSA Cup. Under the slightly tinkered schedule teams will have a break at Week 20 which will be on January 14.

The Chipolopolo will play its opening match at the Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023 on January 17 against the Democratic Republic of Congo. They will face Tanzania four days later while their final match will be against Morocco on January 24.
