Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League champions Gor Mahia opened a seven-point gap at the summit following their 1-0 victory against Posta Rangers at Machakos Stadium on Saturday.
After a cagey start to the game that involved the league leaders and second-placed team on the table, it was K’Ogalo, who finally scored what turned out to be the winner in the 40th minute. Alpha Odhiambo delivered a corner that man of the match Kennedy Onyango rose the highest to head home past Posta goalkeeper Michael Wanjala.
The win enabled Gor Mahia to stretch their lead at the top with 47 points from 17 matches, while Posta, who have enjoyed the lead for most of the campaign, dropped to third with 29 points.. In another top fixture, Nairobi City Stars took advantage of Posta losing to Gor Mahia to thrash FC Talanta 3-0 and jump to second with 30 points. Simba wa Nairobi looked the dangerous side from the onset and they took the lead in the 45th minute courtesy of Mohammed Bajaber.
Robinson Asenwa added the second in the 55th minute before Samuel Kapeni rounded off the emphatic victory in the 77th minute and condemned Talanta to their fifth defeat of the campaign. Talanta have dropped to position 11 on 20 points, while City Stars have now won six straight matches in the top-flight.
The run started with a 3-1 victory against Kariobangi Sharks, a 1-0 win against Posta, a 1-0 victory against Bandari, a 2-1 win against Ulinzi Stars, a 1-0 result against Kakamega Homeboyz, and now the 3-0 outcome against Talanta.
Meanwhile, Homeboyz’ downward spiral continued after they suffered a 3-0 defeat against Kenya Police. Former K’Ogalo defender Musa Mohammed notched the opener for the law enforcers before Kenneth Muguna and Tito Okello sealed the win. Homeboyz, who on matchday 14 were sitting second on the log, have now dropped to position six on 27 points.
Their last victory came in a 2-0 triumph over Shabana, but they have gone ahead to suffer defeats – 2-0 against rivals AFC Leopards and 1-0 against City Stars and now 3-0 against Police. Elsewhere, Bandari recovered from their 1-0 defeat against Gor Mahia to defeat Nzoia Sugar by a similar margin while Shabana’s poor run continued after they went down 1-0 against Muhoroni Youth.
