Uganda Vipers SC thrash Busoga United to move second, URA held

Ugandan Premier League defending champions, Vipers SC returned to second place after thrashing 10-man Busoga United 3-0 at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Sunday.

The Venoms had been temporarily pushed down to fourth following Kitara and Maroons wins a day before. But goals from Eric Kenzo Kambale, Milton Karisa, and a penalty by Abubakar Lawal ensured coach Livingston Mbabazi’s side finished the first round well positioned to still defend their title.

Vipers moved to 30 points, just three behind leaders BUL, both having played 15 games apiece. On their part, Busoga reached the season halfway mark third from bottom on 15 points. The day turned from bad to worse for the visitors – Busoga – when their player Salim Munaku Wekiye got marching orders after picking his second booking of the game in added time.

In the other game between URA and SC Villa played in Lugazi, there was nothing to separate the two sides in the goalless stalemate. Sixteen-time record league winners, Villa, end the first round in fifth on 26 points, with URA three places below on 21.
