AFCON AFCON 2023: ‘Most important thing Ivory Coast won’ – Seko Fofana

Ivory Coast midfielder Seko Fofana has praised his teammates for winning their opening fixture of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.

Playing at a packed Alassane Ouattara Stadium, the Elephants kicked off their campaign in style by beating Guinea-Bissau 2-0. It was Fofana, who features for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, who scored the opener with only four minutes played before they extended their advantage just before the hour mark when substitute Jean-Philippe Krasso acrobatically fired home after great work from Jonathan Bamba.

Speaking after the game, Fofana, who was named man of the match said: “We feel a lot of emotions after this victory and we also think about a lot of things. When we were young and saw elders playing and giving pleasure, we could only be happy. We are the organizing country and there is a lot of expectation from the public. So we knew not to fall into the trap. The most important thing is to have won.”

The Elephants will now prepare to face a much sterner test in their next Group A match against three-time champions Nigeria on Wednesday.
