AFCON AFCON 2023: Avram Grant declares Tanzania clash must-win for Zambia

Zambia coach Avram Grant has called on his charges to beat Tanzania in their second match of the Africa Cup of Nations at the Laurent Pokou Stadium on Sunday.

While the Chipolopolo Boys earned a point against a very aggressive DR Congo in their Group opener, Tanzania’s Taifa Stars suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat against Morocco. “I don’t think about losing,” Grant told a pre-match press conference in San Pedro. “I know it’s part of the game but we must be positive. In every game that comes, we must be positive. We did it against Congo and we will do it against Morocco. We just want to be positive and we will do everything to win the game.

“We want to qualify for the next round. We are always looking to improve in all aspects, be it defense or offense. I don’t think about losing before the game. We know it’s a tough game but we think positively about each game.

Grant further said the Congo match was behind with Zambia focused on the match against Tanzania by saying: “The most important (thing) in football is the next game, we did a good result in the first game, it was a good performance from the boys for the first game. Zambia did not participate in the Africa Cup for a long time, too long for us, it will not happen again. The first game was against a very strong team, we did well, we scored a goal they equalised. The first game I am happy, but the second game is always very important for us because we want to go to the next round.”

The former Chelsea coach added Tanzania were a good side that had a good game against Morocco but suffered after being given a red card. “To be honest I do not know, I know they want to play on the pitch. I was impressed with them, they are hard to beat, I think except the 3-0 against Morocco they were good.”

He said the firing of the Tanzania coach Adel Amrouche after their opening match would not impact in the match in any way. “Every coach comes with his ideas I do not know about this coach (interim Tanzania coach), but we need to prepare for everything.”
